Where do they turn
when all their friends are in school, and they must be isolated?
Zichron Menachem's
unique Educational and Social Day Care Center provides a substitute framework
for children with cancer. They cannot get together with friends and cannot
attend classes. Their immune systems are vulnerable to infection, caused
by the toxic chemotherapy they are undergoing.
Treatments for children fighting cancer often
span an entire school year, or possible two. They are often treated as
outpatients, and spend a good deal of time at home. "Home Alone" is counter-productive
for the bored child, and places great strain on parents and other siblings,
especially when both parents work outside the home.
At the Zichron Menachem
Day Care Center, children receive individual and group attention. They play,
study, eat and rest. Recreational activities abound. They are encouraged
to learn new skills, and to share with each other. Some of the center's
activities include:
· Music
· Computers
· Art
· Aero-modeling
· Sports
· activities
· Photography lessons
· Journalism classes
After school hours, the children's brothers
and sisters are welcomed in the center for hours of homework help, computer
activities, games and support.
Due to the enormous demand for the center since
its inception 8 years ago, services and equipment is being continually upgraded
and improved, and we have outgrown our current facility.
The demands of ill teenagers are particularly
acute, as they require space and services beyond the physical capacity of
the center.
In response to the increased need for physical
space and specialized services, Zichron Menachem is now building a NEW Day
Care Center that will answer the growing needs of the children and teenagers.
